Short History of ICD

The idea for ICD was conceived in Japan in November 1920 by Dr. Tsurukich Okumura, who urged Dr. Louis Ottofy to form an international organization to study the progress of the dental profession and distribute the information to all countries of the world.

The purpose of the Organization was to promote cordial relations amongst professionals and help disseminate scientific information. On New Year's Eve, December 31st, 1927, in Illinois, Chicago, U.S.A., the ICD was officially born.

By the end of 1928, 250 fellows from 162 countries, states and provinces had accepted Fellowship in the College. Fellows were made up of those who had international reputations and were active members of FDI, while others were upon recommendation.

The organization had Dr. Ernest Jassen (Switzerland) as its first President, Dr. Elmer Best (U.S.A.) as first Secretary-General, and Dr. Louis Ottofy as its first Registrar.

ICD members and fellows have a responsibility of always being students, continuing to learn and share knowledge with others in the profession.
